Terms of Proceedings - SU 2016 Gathering

Terms of Proceedings

Terms amended 25/10/2015, 17/9/2016

Due to the nature of the struggle unfortunately we have had detractors who in past meetings have sought to disrupt the proceedings. Most of our people undertake great effort to attend these Gatherings and everyone expects to be able to focus on the matters at hand in the limited time frame. To avoid interruptions again, we ask that you agree to these terms and conditions to ensure the gathering goes smoothly. [node:read-more:link]

Decolonisation Message to Sovereign Union

Decolonise

Letter to SU - '... While I fall into the white/migrant category of Australians I would have to be blind not to see the deceitful and exploitative nature of the Crown and its local agents, as well as the 'assimilate or die' tactics used against the Aboriginal people ...

Tolerating the Crown despite its crimes against humanity would amount to acquiescing to those crimes and inviting their continuation. [node:read-more:link]

Owl Stone

Plans by Hanson Construction Materials to expand its quarrying operations could affect Aboriginal heritage sites, including a camp where iconic warrior Yagan is said to have had his last meal. Hanson, a subsidiary of German-based Heidelberg Cement, submitted an application to impact Aboriginal sites so it can expand its Red Hill Quarry, which could destroy areas sacred to Nyungar people.
- 'Can't you feel the sacredness of that stone. You don't need to touch it; just being near it is enough.' [node:read-more:link]

While old Indigenous languages disappear, new ones evolve

By now we know that traditional Indigenous languages are losing speakers rapidly and tragically. Of the 250 languages once spoken in Australia, only 40 remain and just 18 of these are still learnt by children. But if children in remote Indigenous communities aren't still learning traditional languages, then what are they learning? It is generally assumed they are shifting to English, but this is not the case. - Article by Felicity Meakins from The University of Queensland [node:read-more:link]

Recognition Bill forced on First Nations people against their will

On 7 February, 2013 the Australian Senate will vote on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples Recognition Bill 2012 despite overwhelming opposition to constitutional inclusion by the majority of Aboriginal people and the government's own acknowledgement that the proposed changes to the constitution would be rejected by a referendum.
This shows the paternalistic contempt that the Federal Government and politicians have for Aboriginal people has not changed in 112 years. [node:read-more:link]

High Court writ sought to challenge Australian governments acting as a corporation registered in the US

It is our time to take the biggest stand in our history as an invaded people. I believe that Aboriginal people have now reached the point where going forward means challenging the status quo and altering our history.

We have two choices: to de-colonize ourselves and become free and independent people pursuing our own chosen destiny through the process of self-determination, or to acquiesce and become assimilated into the invader society, degrading our culture to mere museum pieces in which we perform like trained monkeys for the tourists.
