Ghillar Michael Anderson, Convenor and Joint Spokesperson of the Sovereign Union and Head of State of Euahlayi Peoples Republic, said from Goodooga today that the police raid on the Redfern Aboriginal Tent Embassy at such a time of year shows the callous disregard and disrespect for the right to protest by Aboriginal people on an issue that is near and dear to their hearts. I am surprised that the Aboriginal Housing Company committed this action against the Redfern Aboriginal Tent Embassy at this time of year.

People are suffering in every quarter of our society from callous, uncaring and bigotted governments, which insist on eroding our rights and placing fear into the hearts and minds of the general community over matters that are of their own making.

For the Aboriginal Housing Company to approve of the removal of the Embassy without dialogue on issues that are worrying the people is just plain silly. The whole purpose of establishing the original Redfern Housing Company was to deliver low cost housing to an impoverished community. It was intended to lift the people out of the despair of poverty and squalor.

I acknowledge that the Aboriginal Housing Company, in working with the government of the day during the Sydney Olympics, made a significant contribution to relocate, with better housing, the former tenants of The Block, as many of the tenants relocated were housed back in their home towns or in other parts of the Sydney Metropolitan region.

It can be understood why the Redfern Aboriginal Housing Company seeks to enter into a commercial world, as governments are forcing Aboriginal people into the new world economy and this means that if the Housing Company seeks to fit into this world, then they should do so without having to resort to establishing confrontations between our people and the police over the Block that was acquired for the purpose of improving our lot.

We must avoid attacking each other. This fits right into the concepts and expectations that mainstream have with regard to Aboriginal Peoples. There are other ways to solving problems, other than calling upon the NSW Police.

I ask the directors of the Redfern Aboriginal Housing Company to rethink their aggressive mode of operation and to enter into dialogue in a diplomatic manner.
